And, while his Quest Line can lead players to the “Blessing of Despair” Ending, it does also have an alternate path where the Tarnished can summon this deplorable man as their Spirit Ashes. Doing this is slightly difficult, as it requires Elden Ring players to be at specific points in multiple NPC Quest Lines, so let’s go over the exact steps needed.
Reach Ranni’s Rise & Obtain Seluvis’ Potion
First off, players will need to reach Ranni’s Rise and the end of the Carian Manor to swear their loyalty to this Empyrean. Afterward, Ranni will have the player speak with all three of her loyal subjects: War Counselor Iji, Blaidd her faithful Shadow, and the most hated of all, Preceptor Seluvis. Talking to Seluvis’ spirit, in particular, will let the player know that his actual body is staying in the tower just south of Ranni’s, and the player can go visit him.

Doing so results in Seluvis handing the Tarnished a potion of his own making (called Seluvis’ Potion) and telling the player to give this concoction to Nepheli Loux, Sir Gideon Ofnir’s adopted daughter. This is the potion players need in order to turn Dung Eater into a Spirit Summon, so don’t hand it to anyone else (Nepheli or Gideon) until the time is right.
Meet The Ethereal Dung Eater & Free His Corporeal Body
Next, players will need to reach the Altus Plateau in any capacity and then rest at a Grace. Once they’ve done this, they can return to the Roundtable Hold to find that the door behind the Twin Maiden Husks is now open, and the Spirit of the Dung Eater is sitting “politely” inside.
Speak to the Dung Eater and he’ll have some truly depraved things to say before his dialogue starts to repeat. To progress Dung Eater’s conversation, players will need to bring him one of the six different Seedbed Curses found throughout the game. These Curses can be a bit tricky to locate, but these are their general locations:
Leyndell Royal Capital at the top of a tower that requires an elevator to access. Leyndell Royal Capital in the abandoned recreation of the Roundtable Hold, inside what would be the Dung Eater’s room. Leyndell Royal Capital in the outer moat near the Capital Ramparts, but only if the player has completed Blackguard’s Quest before this point. Volcano Manor past the Stonesword Key fog door near the teleport that takes players to Rykard’s arena. Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree on a balcony above the area with a series of arches just before the Putrid Avatar and the Ballista. Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree climb down every staircase in view from the Prayer Room Grace, reach the room with the two Cleanrot Knights, jump off the railing down a level, and enter the dark room directly under this railing.
Once players find even one of these Seedbed Curses, they can return and talk to Dung Eater. He will “smell the curse on them” and hand the player the Sewer-Gaol Key that unlocks the way to the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds under Leyndell.
Release Dung Eater & Defeat His Invasion
At this point, players need to hop down the well in Leyndell and head to the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. The exact location of his cell is described in this Dung Eater full Quest Walkthrough. After finding his cell and opening it, talk to Dung Eater and tell him he’s free.
Return to the Roundtable Hold and look for him in his room. The Dung Eater should be missing at this point and a message should be on the ground telling players where to go.
Head to where the third Seedbed Curse would be, AKA the moat near the Capital Ramparts with the Giant Crab spawn, and walk up to the body tied to the chair. Get close enough and a message should pop up telling the player they were invaded by Dung Eater. Beat the Dung Eater here, and get ready to head back into the sewers.

Force-Feed Him Seluvis’ Potion
After returning to Roundtable Hold and talking to the Ethereal Dung Eater one more time, players can finally use Seluvis’ Potion. Head back to the Dung Eater’s jail cell in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds, and he should be tied up to a chair. Normally, this is where the Tarnished would implant the Seedbed Curses within him, but there should be another option to give him Seluvis’ Potion. Do so, and the deed is done.
Find Seluvis’ Secret Room & Buy The Doll
At this point, all that’s left is to buy the Dung Eater Puppet Spirit Ash from Seluvis. But, to make this “Puppet” shop appear, players need to find the Preceptor’s secret room first. Head out of Ranni’s tower and go to the first set of “Ruins” on the left. There should be an obvious pattern on the stone floor that looks similar to the underground entrances found in other Ruins in Elden Ring (that usually cost Stonesword Keys to enter) but covered with stone. Hit this patch of ground, and the illusionary floor will disappear, revealing a staircase that leads down to Seluvis’ Room.
In this horror movie room, walk to the back wall and on the right-hand side should be a message that says “Seluvis’ puppet. Do not touch.” Hit the wall directly behind and to the left of this message, and it should disappear revealing a soulless Dung Eater sitting on the ground. If the Puppet Dung Eater is in this room, players can confirm that everything has been done correctly.
Sit at a Grace first, then return to Seluvis and ask him about this room. He should offer all of his puppets, such as the Jarwight Puppet and the Finger Maiden Therolina Puppet, as well as the Dung Eater Puppet. If the Dung Eater doesn’t appear here, players can buy some of his sorceries as well as give him an Amber Starlight and the option should appear to ask for another Puppet. The Dung Eater will be in this shop if it didn’t appear before.
