Elektra Natchios is a character closely associated with Daredevil. The two have been lovers at times, enemies at others. She is a formidable fighter who can go toe to toe with the Man Without Fear. Previously, she’s been played by Jennifer Garner in the 2003 Daredevil film, and then again in a self-titled 2005 Elektra film that bombed critically and commercially. More recently, Elodie Yung portrayed the character on Netflix’s Daredevil alongside Cox, who has recently returned to the MCU as the character in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk.

Gonzalez has been rumored to be the latest actress to take up the mantle of Elektra. However, the actress took to Twitter to address speculation, writing, “I feel like I’m just gonna get it out of the way because, One I’m confused as for the amount of hate over this and two I feel like it saves people energy. No I’m not cast as Elektra in Daredevil I have already a on going series exclusivity contract to 3 Body Problem. Ur welcome.” She clarified that she is exclusively committed to The Three Body Problem on Netflix and likely wouldn’t be able to commit to Daredevil: Born Again, which is 18 episodes long (a decent time commitment in the streaming age).

Yung’s Elektra was last seen in Netflix’s The Defenders series, where she took on the team and faced off against Daredevil once more. She was buried alive at the end of that series alongside Daredevil as they shared a kiss, but her body was never found, and Daredevil survived the encounter. It’s been more than five years since that appearance.

The canonicity of Netflix’s Marvel fare, including that of Daredevil, has been up in the air. While there are some who insist the series are entirely canon, other fans think that the MCU may take a broad strokes approach by taking what worked from the Netflix series and leaving behind what didn’t (or perhaps just recasting if an actor is no longer available). If a major character like Elektra is recast, that would likely indicate that the latter approach is the one that’s stuck.

Certainly, Gonzalez deserves to be treated respectfully. Her tweet seems to aim at dispelling the negativity that’s been headed her way as some fans spew vitriol over the perceived recast. The plot of Daredevil: Born Again is not even known yet, so Elektra’s return is not assured, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the character does make a comeback.

Daredevil: Born Again will hit Disney Plus in spring 2024.
