When Pattinson was first cast as The Batman back in 2019, many fans were skeptical if the actor could look the part, especially when looking back at Ben Affleck’s brawny depiction in the DCEU. It didn’t help when the actor blatantly told GQ in 2020 that he would not spend as much time working on his physique. But fast-forward a couple of years later and from the first few trailers, it was clear that Pattinson was not telling the truth.

Sitting down with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show promoting his upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore film, Redmayne recalled the time seeing a buff Pattinson in a gym preparing for his The Batman role, who at first he did not recognize. “When we made Fantastic Beasts it was at the same studio that Rob was making Batman and we shared a gym because my character and my body is so buff,” Redmayne joked. “One day I went to the gym and I walked in and there was this guy with a high ponytail, massive, doing the most extraordinary stunts I’ve ever seen with his stunt director.”
“I walk in and there’s this guy and this guy goes, ‘Hi,’ and I go, ‘Hi,’ and then I just sort of sit there watching him do these incredible things while I sort of weakly do a sit-up in the corner. As I’m going, this guy goes, ‘Bye, Eddie!’ And I look back and it was Rob,” said Redmayne. “He was so physically changed and he had a man bun and what I’d seen him do was so dumbfounding. He completely transformed himself.”
While training for the role eventually went smoothly for Pattinson, he recently shared with On Demand Entertainment that he never wants to see another piece of white fish ever again after his diet for The Batman. With two more sequels planned for Reeves’ new batverse, it appears that Pattinson is not quite done with keeping his Batman physique, and it is very likely that he will put on even more muscle for what is to come.
The Batman has been in theatres for a little over a month, and the film continues to have much success at the global box office, as it has now reached roughly $735M worldwide. As for Redmayne, his Harry Potter prequel/spin-off looks to have another successful theatrical run as well, like its two predecessors, 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
The Batman will hit HBO Max starting April 18, 2022, while Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is now playing in theaters.
