Specifically, some were initially hoping to see the announcement of Mortal Kombat 12 at this year’s EVO tournament. The Evolution Championship Series is one of the most notable tournaments in the competitive fighting game calendar. With large prize pools and plenty of games to play, much of the fighting game community also expects some big announcements to drop during the event. This has especially been the case this year after PlayStation announced that there would be reveals at EVO 2022 from the developers of the fighting games featured there.

However, it seems that Ed Boon has confirmed that fans won’t be seeing any major Mortal Kombat reveals at the event. In response to a tweet from IGN saying that the developers behind Mortal Kombat and other games are expected to make announcements at this year’s EVO, Boon stated on Twitter that there are no reveals planned. Boon went on to say that “it’s time for Street Fighter and other great fighting games to be in the sun.” Of course, the developer making specific remarks about Mortal Kombat not revealing anything at EVO led fans to speculate about an Injustice 3 announcement instead.

This conjecture online isn’t exactly unjustified, as there have been multiple reports that NetherRealm Studios, the company that creates both Mortal Kombat and Injustice, has been working on a new project. At 2021’s The Game Awards, NetherRealm almost made an announcement but decided the project wasn’t ready yet, and back in February, Ed Boon teased the next game from the Mortal Kombat developers.

This means that there will likely be an announcement from the studio at some point in the future, but fans are left to speculate on what game it will be about. For any gamers wanting more Mortal Kombat content, the sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie has been officially announced, with the director of the first film returning. The film hasn’t entered production yet, though, so fans could be waiting a while for that to drop as well.
